Saturday, 18 July 2020

Interview about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in SADC. The discussion evaluates the various impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the regional economy, government finances and balance of payments throughout SADC. The interview also discusses new human security challenges and violence caused by terrorism in Cabo Delgado which threaten to destabilise Mozambique’s mega projects in natural gas. The discussion also highlights how the deepening recession in South Africa creates a need for further stimulus in the form of an interest rate cut to but that this is not the South African Reserve Bank mandate even though the low growth environment has lowered inflation significantly. Hence, any assertion about the possibility of another interest rate cut would be speculation due to economic uncertainties.
