Coat of Arms
The Nigerian coat of arms has a black shield with white lines that form a "Y" shape. The black shield represents Nigeria's fertile soil. The shield is supported by two horses on each side representing dignity. Above the shield there are green and white bands which represent the rich soil. The eagle above the green and white bands represents strength.
The red flowers at the base are Nigeria's national flower, costus spectabilis. This flower was chosen for inclusion on the coat of arms as it is found all over Nigeria and also stands for the beauty of the nation. The Nigerian national motto: Unity and Faith, Peace and Progress is written on the ribbon at the base of the coat of arms.
