Diplomatic Challenges for the South Africa International Travel Ban List

Power98.7: Power Perspective

Sunday, 20 September 2020

Interview about the recent easing of lockdown restrictions by the Government of South Africa to Level 1 which includes reopening of international borders and resumption of international travel from 1 October 2020. The government has also decided to publish an Epidemiologically Safe List of Countries in addition to other travel protocols for international travellers visiting South Africa which could pose a diplomatic nightmare given that major trading partners and BRICS partners like Brazil and India are still faced with rising infections and death rates. The discussion reviews the possible impact of this policy decision on the South African tourism industry, the country’s diplomatic relations and the national recovery plan from COVID-19. The interview also discusses the possible role that neighbouring countries and SADC can play in the process of international re-engagement; and the options available for visitors from countries that will be barred from traveling to South Africa.
