Political Economy Review: SADC 2020

Metro FM: Metro FM Talk with Ayabonga Cawe

Monday, 24 August 2020

Interview about the recent firing of Zambian central bank Governor Denny Kalyalya who was replaced by Christopher Mvunga at the Bank of Zambia. Following this decision by Zambian President Edgar Lungu, South African Minister of Finance Tito Mboweni published a controversial tweet demanding the reasons for Kalyalya’s firing and promising to mobilise against the Government of Zambia if no reasons were provided which resulted in South African President Cyril Ramaphosa reprimanding Mboweni and publishing a statement from the Presidency on the matter. The discussion reviews the reprimand against the context of SADC diplomatic principle of “silent diplomacy” and whether there is a time and place for Mboweni’s calling out of the Zambian President. The interview also discusses how SADC has dealt with civil unrest in Zimbabwe and the insurgence in Mozambique; and the economic and fiscal challenges currently facing Zambia.
