Interview about the easing of South Africa’s national lockdown response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion reviews the trade-off between the national lockdown which is required to flatten the curve and the economic impact on citizen livelihoods, particularly for the informal sector. The discussion evaluates the whether the lockdown is being eased too soon, whether industries have capacity to implement social distancing and screen of employees, and whether schools are ready to be reopened without compromising the national response to COVID-19. The interview also discusses the options available for government to finance the additional expenditure.
